A Harvard student did her first Aids Walk NY with the GET DOWN Campaign. It’s all about awareness over here. Check out her moving experience

Took A Walk

Yesterday I participated in the AIDS walk that took place in NYC.  I joined thousands of people as we walked the streets of Manhattan spreading cheer and awareness on the fight on AIDS and HIV.  To be honest I thought it was one of the best events I had ever been apart of,  all of the fundraising and tweeting I did for the event beforehand made the event that much more worth it.  Just the vibe and the energy of the people involved was just so inspiring, and the most awesome part of the event is you saw so many different types of people at the event.  Once upon a time AIDS and HIV was seen to be an epidemic that affected only gay community, but after yesterday I now see thats not the case.  So many different communities were there yesterday, all for different reason, but at the same time all walking for the same cause.

This was my first year walking but I definitely plan to do it again, and it really meant alot for me to get the opprotunity to be apart of this event.  I think AIDS and HIV is something people tend to shy away from talking about and I think that instead of being scared of the topic we should just embrass it.  We should share our stories and spread awareness because whether we like it or not AIDS and HIV is still real and its not going anywhere.  I met some people that have been doing the walk since the very first one, which was almost 20 years ago.  20 years of helping spread awareness and fighting the cause, I take off my hat to these people.
